The issue with seafood restaurants in Atlanta is they tend to be a bit stuffy. While the food is delicious, the atmosphere is usually formal and the prices are steep. For most diners, these restaurants are typically reserved for celebrations, not casual family dinners.

That is precisely why Big B’s Fish Joint in Sandy Springs stands out in the crowd of traditional seafood restaurants. The food is incredible, but with a much more laid-back, charming environment, Big B’s is the kind of eatery you can bring your family to on a weeknight -- no special occasion necessary.

Read on to see what to expect from your meal at Big B’s and what to order if you’re craving something super flavorful.

WHY GO

  • Because you want to be transported to the beach without the six-hour drive

  • And because you’re in the mood for delicious seafood without the white-table-cloth setting

THE VIBE

  • Light and bright seating, including large booths and individual tables

  • An inviting bar in the nautical color scheme of navy and white

  • A playlist consisting of beachy classics like Jimmy Buffet and the Beach Boys

START WITH THIS

  • A half dozen oysters on the half shell is a must!

    • They’re perfectly fresh and served with all the classic accoutrement: Cocktail sauce with horseradish, lemon, and Crystal’s hot sauce (aka the best hot sauce).

  • If you’re not the biggest fan of oysters, try the smoked trout spread as your starter. It’s served cold, with toasted crostinis

    • My husband, who doesn’t usually care for smoked fish of any kind, really liked this appetizer, which is a great indicator of how tasty it is

THEN EAT THIS

  • Creamy scallop pasta: Y’all, this dish is so flavorful! It was easily one of my favorites.

    • Tossed in a sherry lemon brown butter and topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, this linguini pasta is served with five jumbo scallops

    • It’s savory and delicious and filling! You can easily share this pasta plate with your dining companion, especially if you’re also ordering starters and dessert

  • Fresh Maine lobster roll: A classic handheld preparation that is reminiscent of summer

    • ¼ lb of Maine lobster meat, dressed with brown butter, lemon, and chives, all served on a buttered Holeman + Finch New England bun

    • Served with Old Bay French Fries, which are to die for!

  • Key lime pie: As tasty as it is pretty, served with a kiwi-lime syrup and whipped cream. It is the perfect ending to a summer-inspired meal!
