Where to have “Wicked”-good cocktails in midtown Atlanta

The musical “Wicked” is returning to Atlanta this summer! It’s playing at The Fox Theatre July 5 - 30, and tickets are on sale now.

“Wicked” tells the story of the Land of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival. Remember the Wicked Witch of the West? This musical tells her origin story – a smart, talented, yet misunderstood woman and her rivalry and friendship with Glinda the Good Witch.

“Wicked” tells the origin story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz”

Elphaba’s friendship and rivalry with Glina the Good Witch is a big part of the storyline

The winner of a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, “Wicked” is the fifth longest-running show in Broadway history. And this summer is a great time to see what Time Magazine calls “a magical Broadway musical with brains, heart, and courage.” The show is playing every Thursday through Sunday during the month of July, with two call times on the weekends. And on Thursday, July 6, there is a special matinee performance at 1 p.m., in addition to the evening showing.

Regardless of when you choose to see “Wicked” at the Fox, consider stopping for a “wicked” cocktail at one of the bars or restaurants around midtown. And have a wicked-good time at the show!

Jojo’s Beloved

This hidden but not-so-secret bar and lounge has a truly impressive cocktail list. From signature concoctions to draft cocktails to for-the-table libations, there is a drink on this list for everyone. Some standouts include French 75 for the table – served in coupe glasses, so classy! – Woo Woo Girls, and My Offer Is Nothing.

Jojo’s Beloved is located in the back of Politan Row, the stunning food hall at Colony Square. In addition to excellent refreshments, except a great vibe as well – groovy and glamorous ‘70s, with velvet booths and a playlist to match.

The Consulate

The Consulate is a fun place to return to because you likely won’t have the same thing twice. This restaurant rotates its menu every 90s, when the chef picks a new global cuisine to showcase. And cocktails are no exception. Currently, the Consulate is serving Irish fare, and their craft cocktail selection includes the Irish Rose Negroni and Banshee Scream.

The Consulate is located at 10th & West Peachtree, less than a mile away from the Fox.

Cafe 1933

Don’t sleep on the cocktail menu of this modern American restaurant. Many of the signature concoctions are TV and movie-themed, with names like And Just Like That, Tropic Thunder, and The Secret Garden. And the classics section includes true classics with a twist, like the Oaxaca Old Fashioned and Tipsy Spritz (a take on aperol spritz).

Cafe 1933 is located right on Peachtree Street and has Prohibition era-themed decor, making it a great spot to grab a drink before or after the show.

El Valle

El Valle is an authentic Mexican restaurant with an elevated setting. The food menu shows off the diversity of Mexico’s gastronomy, and the cocktail menu follows suit. The majority of the drinks are made with an impressively varied selection of tequilas and mezcals, and many use unique ingredients like tomato honey cordial or maraschino chile guero. The list also boasts a remarkable selection of non-alcoholic cocktails, beers, and wines.

El Valle is located on Peachtree and 5th – just two blocks away from the Fox – and has a fun outdoor patio.

Rowdy Tiger

Rowdy Tiger is best known for its stunning rooftop patio and its selection of whiskeys and whiskey cocktails. The drink menus and decor are both heavily influenced by the Prohibition era and the speakeasies of the 1920s. The menus includes drinks like Vieux Carre, Singapore Sling, and Pimm’s Cup. Pro tip: The indoor dining room and the rooftop lounge have different cocktail selections, both equally impressive.

Located near West Peachtree and 8th, you’ll likely need to drive from this restaurant to the Fox, but Rowdy Tiger is worth having to find parking twice in one evening.
